Superworms

Habitat

• Container: Use a plastic or glass container with smooth sides (e.g., a 10-gallon tank). Ensure the container has good ventilation but is escape-proof.
• Substrate: Fill the bottom with 1-2 inches of wheat bran, oats, or cornmeal, which serves as both bedding and food.

Temperature and Humidity

• Temperature: Maintain between 75-85°F for optimal growth and activity.
• Humidity: Keep the habitat dry. Superworms thrive in low-humidity environments. Avoid excess moisture to prevent mold or mites.

Food and Water

• Food: Provide fresh vegetables (e.g., carrots, potatoes, apples) for moisture and nutrients. Supplement with bran, oats, or commercial insect food for long-term health.
• Water Source: Moisture from fresh vegetables is sufficient; do not add standing water to avoid drowning.

Cleaning and Maintenance

• Remove uneaten vegetables daily to prevent mold and bacteria buildup.
• Sift the substrate every 2-3 weeks to separate worms from waste and frass (droppings).

Lifecycle

• Larvae (Superworms): The stage typically used as feeders. They can remain in this stage for several months if kept together.
• Pupae: To encourage pupation, isolate individual worms in small containers.
• Beetles: After pupation, they become darkling beetles, which can breed and produce more superworms.

Storage

• Unlike mealworms, superworms should not be refrigerated, as they require warmth to survive. Store at room temperature with fresh food and substrate.
